Fall from grace[Diego]

It was becoming the New Year in Italy and citizens had spent their Christmas at parties. The days were short as the sun would set early in the evening. During the day temperatures were cold but not too cold to walk in. Snow started to melt in the city of Venice, and the picture perfect scene was fading quickly. This day a young lady walked the streets alone in search of a few things she had on her list. Material for some new clothing designs, and a few repairs she normally would have done on her own. For the first time since her stay in Roma, Alessia wore a red dress with long sleeves to keep her warm. She had her sword at her side as she walked through the city streets. Ali’s hair tied back in a messy bun, it was obvious that she didn’t pull her hair up like this too often. A small red ribbon could be seen dangling down in the back of her hair. She walked down to where the Tailor was carrying a basket and a bag around her shoulders.

Alessia grabbed the fabric and a blanket she needed to finish up. She kindly paid the tailor who helped her a lot when it came to the things she needed. It was time for her to meet with the black smith for her sword repair. She had a bit of a run in with it breaking. Naturally this sword had been passed down for generations in her family, the metal was fragile of the last years of use. Ali made it handing him the sword broken in pieces. It was a hope that he could fix it, and not just make her buy a new sword. She walked away from the black smith heading towards the center of the town. One thing on her mind was to enjoy a somewhat peaceful day. Things usually changed for her and she would be sent on a mission as it would be her luck of the week. This female hadn’t gone on a mission for about a month due to her getting things in order. Alessia found a spot to sit down a bit away from people. It was the moment she sat down she pulled some bread out of her basket and broke a piece off.

It was a busy day at the shop, as many customers were requesting metal pots, pans, and tankards to cook warm meals for their New Years feasts. The furnace heated the entire building, so much so that Diego had to open the windows to let some of the wintery wind cool the place down. The apprentice he had hired for the season worked in the back, forging the easier models of specially ordered products, and Diego manned the front desk.

It was a surprise to him though to receive such a battered and broken sword, and from a woman no less, dressed in a red gown without a trace of Assassin's garments on her. It must have been her husbands. Diego looked at the shattered pieces in his hand. What the hell had happened to this thing? It looked old, too, and simply realigning the pieces would not save it. The cracks in the metal would not bear the stress of use. The only way he could think to mend it was to melt the whole thing down and start over, remoulding it to look at least similar to the original. It would make it as good as new, but would sacrifice whatever heritage the antique carried through its broken metal core. He needed permission to do that, though. "Donna!" he called over the counter of his shop window. She had already left down the street, and he still needed a name for the order, too. He waved his arm out, trying to get her attention and flag her back.

Alessia was lost in her own mind, half worried that she would have to get a new sword. Naturally she would have to explain to her brother what happened to the sword when he saw her next. That was a funny story of how the sword became broken and battered pretty bad. Sadly the use of battle was bad but it broke when she hit a wall. A voice broke her thoughts pretty quick, the man who took her sword was yelling Donna. Then the thought came to her, it was probably her sword maybe he had a question about it. This was something new for her simply because she usually worked on these things herself. Naturally she was a bit hesitant when a few people told her to take it to a black smith. Ali stood up and grabbed her basket and bag as she headed back towards the shop. A little sigh came out upon reaching the shop again. “Signore? Did you call for me?” She asked politely, knowing full well that there was probably an issue with her sword. It was interesting when people looked at her with that sword always thinking that it was someone else’s.

Alessia looked around knowing that there was no other girl around them. “Its my sword isn’t it?” She spoke again a bit of concern to her voice. She knew that the sword was about a hundred years old if not more; and rarely was it left alone. The female would admit that the sword was hers and she was an assassin like her father before her, and her brother now. It was out of a normal routine that she wore a dress but it helped when she was concealing who she was. Alessia bent down and sat her basket of food on the ground as it was becoming heavy to hold. It was curiosity to see what was going behind the scenes of the shop, rather than stay in the front. Of course, that was to say the young female knew it would be a bad idea to intrude on men working. Especially the ones who would be working on the sword for a while. Which, brought the next thought to her mind, if she had to scrap the sword because the metal was too weak or something she wanted to keep the hilt of the sword. The hilt had a sparrow carved in a little circle in the center of it all. The sparrow was her family’s symbol and well her alias to the assassins. It made it easier that no one knew her name in all reality. It was the snap to reality as she looked back to the man at the front desk. She hoped he didn’t say anything while she was spacing out.

"Sì, Signora." came his response to both of her questions, and he placed the sword on the counter to begin his explanation of what he needed to do. But his eyebrow raised slightly as she said 'my sword'. "This is your sword?" he said, picking up one of the broken pieces. He would have made a joke and asked her how it came to be in this condition, but the worry in her voice stopped him. It wasn't his job to know what happened to it, it was just his job to fix it. So he laid out the pieces again properly and pointed to the gaps between them. "I'm sorry to tell you that it's beyond saving like this." he said. "I can weld them back together the way they are, but it will look awful and will never be able to be used in a fight again. It just wouldn't be strong enough." By the looks of it, it had already been broken and repaired several times. He turned one of the pieces of the blade over and tapped the shattered edge of it. "But what I can do," he said, trying to sound hopeful, "Is melt down the pieces and recast it for you. It won't look exactly the same, but I can try my best, and the metal will be good as new, like the day you bought it." He started to place the pieces onto a cloth so he could move them around better without losing anything. "And I will need a name," he added, "For the order."

It was the moment the man put her sword on the counter that she realized, the sword was in pretty bad shape. That’s also to say that Alessia had done a number this time to it. One thing she learned from her father was to let go of the sword. The man repeated what she said about it being her sword; it was a little odd for someone to ask her that. None the less Alessia knew that girls rarely held swords or fought like she did. “Sí, tis mine…. Of course that’s not saying the wall had much to do with its…sad demise either.” She said with a little laugh. Ali always tried to have a good thought about her sword, well her father’s sword of which she stole from her brother to use. She frowned when he said it was beyond saving, as she figured it would be. He spoke about another idea to make use the metal and recast it. She thought for a moment about the sword if she wanted it to be the same again. It was a broken memory almost at that point of the sword. “Well…” She started to speak but then thought about what she was going to say again.

“Recasting it sounds like the better option. As long as the hilt of the sword, or the sparrow is saved I am fine with your decision.” Alessia said with a smile on her face. In the sense she was happy to have that plan than trying to mend the broken pieces together. “Signore, I have never seen the day it was new… It’s been in my family at least one hundred fifty years.” Ali said with a laugh. It would be good to see a new sword finally and to hold it in her hands. He asked for her name, not shocking really just because of the order. “Sí of course, my name is Alessia Jiron. May I have your name monsieur…” She quickly realized the fact she just went from Italian to French. “Sorry… I am use to speak both Italiano and French to many people.” Alessia quickly put out that fact. She spoke French to her siblings all the time and then spoke Italian to everyone else. It was a wonder how this child worked. “I just want to know the name of the person working on the sword. Only because you’ll be a huge life savior.” She spoke at ease with this male. Normally Ali had issues with men, due to have a long line of them betraying her. This shop keep was different at least.

The wall? He looked at her quizzically, but let it go. Clearly something had transpired beyond what she would be able to explain to him. He would have too many questions. So he picked up the corners of the cloth and then the centers of the edges, folding them inward to make a safe carrying case for the pieces so that he wouldn't drop any while taking them from the counter to the furnace where he would melt them down. "One-hundred and fifty years?" he echoed her, looking down at the scraps in his hand. "Of course we can save the handle." It would be a shame not to; this thing was a relic, practically an artifact. How many generations was that, ten? Eleven? It was no wonder she was so nervous, and cared about it so much. "And my name is Antonnio Leoni, Mademoiselle." he tried his best to put on a French accent, but failed. He couldn't speak a lick of it, and only knew the words for "madam" and "sir". But he would try his best to win his customer's favor, even if that meant throwing in a line or two that they might recognize, especially in her case. He turned to bring the pieces to the fire, but backed up again to face her. "You can come in, if you like, to see how it is done." he offered, and then gave her a wink, "So long as you don't give away any trade secrets."

Alessia was enjoying this time she was spending at the black smith. This man was nice and gave her the best options out there. Though, she was convinced that he was confused about her comment about the sword hitting the wall. It was too hard to explain about why she hit the wall it was one of those situations you had to let go. Alessia watched as he took them into the back area, she hoped it wasn’t too much trouble. He spoke repeating what she said, and a smile across her face. “Yes, for my family I am the eleventh generation to own this sword. I only have it because I stole it from my older brother.” She said with a little giggle. Oh how she learned being a thief had a bit of an advantage when it came down to knowing to take things. Of course she convinced him to give her the sword in an attempt to save herself. Ali was happy that they could save the old handle, that part was important to her and was kind of her identity in the fight against Templars. “OH thank you so very much!” She exclaimed in joy and happiness towards the man who was redoing her sword. Ah he spoke again this time with his name and a bit of attempt at French. She giggled a little at the attempt; for her, it was a nice gesture to speak her one of her languages. Antonnio Leoni was this black smith’s name. Alessia made sure she memorized the name just so she could come back if she needed anything.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Antonnio Leoni. I love your try at French, but you should speak to Italian. It suits you better.” She said with a laugh. Alessia’s smile brightened when he asked her if she would like to come in. Of course, she would love to come in just to see how things were done. She couldn’t believe it, which had made her day. “Really? Of course I would love to come in and see how things are done.” Ali said politely and happily. “I wouldn’t dream of giving any of your trade secrets away.” She said with a little laugh. She wouldn’t dream of doing something like that.

"You stole this?" Now it was beginning to make sense. She didn't seem like the kind of woman who would own a weapon herself. The only women Diego knew who did were in the Creed, and they seemed to be of a different caliber than this woman. She seemed... soft, and her accent only added to that. She wasn't at all like Rahmil, as far as he could tell. But still the question remained. "Why steal a sword?" Obviously she must have wanted someone dead. That was the action the tool performed, after all. That, or protection. Or just to upset her brother. But its condition spoke for itself. She had been fighting with it, in some fashion or another.

He held the door open for her so she could come behind the counter into the main part of the smithy, and nodded when she said he should stick to Italian. As much as he wanted to make a joke, he stopped himself. He didn't know her very well, and too much joking could leave the wrong impression. Diego led her to the back of the shop, where his apprentice was hammering away at one of the stock items. Taking a stone bowl off the wall, he placed most of the metal shards into it, saving the handle and the bit of blade that was still attached to it. Using another tool to remove the last bit of the ancient edge, he put that too into the bowl and saved the handle aside on the table. Next the bowl was put into the furnace with metal tongs, until its contents would melt down into a liquid state.

Most didn’t know much about Alessia being in the creed, and kept her identity pretty secretive. The fact that she stole a sword from her sibling wasn’t a surprise to him or her other family that was still alive. The sword itself was at the time she needed for defense, obviously that had changed since then. “Yes, I did steal it from him.” She said passing it off as it was nothing. That was considering the other things she had done prior to being an assassin. When Diego spoke again asking her why she stole it; Alessia really had to think on her feet. Due to her not knowing this man well enough, she knew the boundaries she had. She wouldn’t tell him she was an assassin, keeping her secret was huge. “It’s a rather long story really...” Alessia said still pondering it over how she would tell it. It was pretty simple but at the same time it was complicated. “You see, about ten years ago my father and mother both passed away. The sword like in any family is to be passed to the oldest surviving child. My brother took the sword and set out to revenge our father’s death.” She said explaining it without really giving details to it. She sighed a little it was still a tough subject to talk about but none the less she would carry on about how she came across the sword. “Without really any protection I had to keep my little sister and I safe. My brother would come back home every once and awhile to check on us. While I lived in the streets for a long time I came to learn how to manage to get things. My brother bought a new sword when he was gone so when he came back, I sort of took it. At first it was protection. Then I became a thief and a part of a guild I learned that using the sword was my options I had.” She said laughing a little back to her days as being a thief.


Alessia had an odd time being a thief, and most thieves ended up becoming assassins, if you knew the right people. “At this point the sword has become my best friend and kind of a thing I still need… Sorry if i bored you with that story. That would be the French in me.” She said with a laugh. She loved making fun of the French. It was simply because they thought of themselves being different and sometimes better than the Italians. Ali had been to France several times. She smiled and walked back with him seeing how the shop. It was like she had dreamed a Black Smith shop would be. She watched as he started in on her sword melting it down.
